Growing Out On A Limb

High Head Trail in April

A couple of weeks ago, on a Saturday, the sun decided to come out and we headed to one of our favorite spots to hike – the high head trail.  This time, the boys and I started on the other end of the 4 km trail, the end we’ve never seen, while Brian and I started at the other end so we could meet in the middle.

It was breezy and cool but this place forces you to pause and take a deep breath and soak it in.

The waves crashing on the shore, the rocky landscape, the sun sparkling off the water… it’s just breathtaking.20170430_121530We packed a picnic lunch and the boys picked here to eat it.  20170430_122255

This little beauty is getting better at hiking on her own… she loves our walks!  20170430_134240

I could hang out here all day.  No wonder we keep going back!

Snow storm

These pics are actually a few weeks old.  The snow from that storm didn’t last long (insert sad face) but we sure enjoyed it while it lasted!

Emery and went for a walk the evening the snow started.  It wasn’t far but it was really beautiful.

Emery made a fort in the trees.

Eleanor is getting around in the snow much better this year and seems to enjoy it!

Please… more snow!!

Waterfall and Geocache Hunt

The kids and I set out today on a waterfall hunt.  I found a map of waterfalls in NS and realized there is one right off the St Margaret’s Bay trail near our house.  (I think this would be a fun thig to plan our hikes around this summer!)  And the geocaching is just a fun bonus to all of our walks/hikes lately!

So the kids packed their bags with geocache treasures, snacks, and who knows what other items they felt were critical at the time… and off we went!

The waterfall ended up being right on the trail and just a few minutes from where we parked, but we realized there was a trail through the woods that ran beside it … and who doesn’t like walking in the woods?!  We sure do!

The brook was a series of little waterfalls called Smelt Brook Falls.  The kids were super impressed!

Oliver was pretty stoked that he could get so close!

After briefly losing emery, we were back on the trail and hunting for Geocaches.

We found one Geocache along the trail…… and another super sneaky one hidden in the guard rail where we parked.

What a nice way to break up a lazy Sunday morning!

Volcano!

One of Emery’s Christmas gifts was a kit to build a volcano.  Over a couple of days Emery built the volcano and put the plaster strips on it.  Then he and Oliver painted it (working very well together I might add).

20170101_17102220170101_172425Everyone was excited to watch it erupt!  20170102_083440

It was a fun project and Emery got to build it from the beginning, which I think he really takes pride in.  And the volcano is still intact so we can erupt it again if we want!

Christmas 2016

The kids had been staring at the gifts under the tree for over a week because I, in a lapse of judgement, set them all out as soon as we had our tree up.  The gifts were shaken, sorted, used as ramps, and smelled over that week.  At times it seemed like a bit of torture for the kids.

But they made it through and Christmas day arrived!  We had such a great day – the kids were patient while everyone opened their gifts in turn and spent the rest of the day playing together so nicely.

Hubby took this time lapse of us opening our gifts… a photo a second.

A few separate pics…

The kids opened their stockings and checked out their gifts from santa first.  20161225_070435Everyone was so excited to see the kids’ reactions.  They slept in until almost 7 am.  (That’s the short version of the story.  The long version involves one or more of them up and out of bed three times through the night).  img_7144
The kids all got beautiful, special quilts made by nana.  img_7156

img_7158Eleanor was so much fun to watch this year… every single gift opening was accompanied by a huge gasp and “I love it!” in a high-pitched squealing voice.
img_7160She loved her huge doll house from Santa.  This is a doll she got from Lisa, her day care provider.  It is nearly as tall as her!  img_7171

Eleanor modeling her new robe and toque…img_7179… and playing with her new play doh set.  img_7187This isn’t even a Christmas day picture but too funny to not put somewhere – Emery honing his selfie skills.  20161226_090746

Every year I post Christmas pictures and wish I had taken more.  But then I think the lack of pictures really shows that I was present and enjoying the actual moments that much more.  I like that.

It has been a really wonderful holiday season – lots of games and fun and food between Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.  Now we are settling in to a visit with nana and papa, which I’m sure will generate more pics!

Emery turns 6!

Emery … you are 6!

img_7091-001

You are our sensitive-but-sometimes-feisty, cautious-but-sometimes-impulsive, thoughtful-(okay-always-thoughtful) six year old boy today!

Your imagination is big and you are super creative.  You like reading and writing (especially writing) and crafting.  You love all the typical boy things – vehicles, minecraft, star wars – but will sit and play dolls with eleanor too.  You love playing with your siblings – you’re so loving.  You take pride when you do something well and wear it all over your face.

Here are some more things about you as you turn six:

  • You are a Beaver!  You look forward to Wednesday nights and seem proud to put on your uniform!
  • You are so great at reading – english and french!  You get more confident with your reading every day.
  • You started curling this year and have been killing it!  I hope you stick with it.
  • You still like snuggling from time to time.  We have big hugs, a secret kiss, and a song at bedtime (my favorite time of day).
  • You do have your moments when you fight back (to us and your siblings).  We correct it but part of me is glad you stand up for yourself.
  • When playing in minecraft, you surprise me with the things you build – they are so creative!
  • You like words and sounds and you often rhyme or pick out funny sounds within words.

This year we gave you the choice between having the typical big party at our place with your friends or picking two of your best buddies for a sleepover and going somewhere special.  You chose the sleepover so we took luke and akshat to the indoor trampoline park, mcdonald’s, and then back to our place for cake and ice cream.  It was so much fun!

And of course we had our own mini celebration here today.  Regardless of how we celebrate, my goal is always to make you feel special… and I’m pretty sure we managed that!

Love you to pieces… Mommy
