Day 10 of our advent calendar is my favorite so far – the activity was ‘Go to the coffee shop for a treat and pay for someone’s order’. We talked about kindness and how us being kind to someone might make them do something kind for someone else.
It nearly backfired on me. The gentleman we approached pulled a wad of bills out of his pocket and said he would rather we buy it for someone who needs it (did he think we thought he looked poor?!) but I told him that it was simply about doing a kind thing for someone and that he should just pay it forward sometime. He agreed, got his coffee, thanked the boys, wished us a good day, and off he went. I hope the boys saw the kindness in it and think I’ll make this something we do randomly now and then.
And then Emery blew me away with his own act of kindness. For reasons that don’t really matter to the story, Oliver was told earlier in the morning that he was not allowed to have a cookie at the coffee shop, just his chocolate milk. When we sat down with our cookies, he was still complaining about wanting one. Emery said, “You can have half of my cookie, Aww-vuh”. He broke his cookie in half and handed one side to Oliver. Then in a slightly lowered voice and perhaps more true to toddler form, he said, “My half is bigger”. I shushed him quickly to avoid a fight but I sat there amazed at the kindness in his soul. Maybe he did get the meaning behind today’s advent?
After Emery finished his chocolate milk, he groaned and said, “ahhh, I have too much milk in my belly”. Apparently this is what too much milk in your belly looks like.
#12. Have breakfast for supper, which we did, but we also added going swimming to this one.
This was Eleanor’s first swim and she loved it! She must have stayed in the water 30 mins or more. We only got out because her hands looked like they were turning a little blue, not because she was complaining.
#13. Watch a Christmas show before bed with popcorn. We opted for the Thomas Christmas show, which we had never seen before.
Tomorrow should be a good one with lots of pics… Oliver’s first Christmas concert!
